            About the Agency
The Washington Heights Inwood Coalition was established in 1978 by religious, educational, and business institutions reflecting the diversity of northern Manhattan.  The Coalition addresses issues of concern to member institutions.  Our broad-based programs improve the day to day lives of local residents filled service gaps, and builds understanding among the many communities making up Washington Heights- Inwood.




The Washington Heights Inwood Coalition offers the following services to 
Manhattan residents living north of 135th street

Community Services

Two family literacy programs (restricted to families of students attending the host schools).
Community workshops about child development, positive discipline, self-esteem, child abuse prevention, and related topics. 
Group, family, and individual counseling for parents.
Parent Resource Center in PS 128M.
Puppet shows that educate young children about avoiding child abuse.
Recreational and cultural activities for families.
Resolution of tenant/landlord disputes through negotiation and advocacy (rent, repairs)                    
Assistance to tenants in applying for housing benefits (SCRIE, HEAP, Housing Authority)
Organization and support of tenants associations
Assistance to owners in applying for rehabilitation loans and correcting building code violations.
Mediation of disputes (harassments, noise complaints, family conflicts, etc.) among community residents.  A neutral mediator helps the people involved to agree on a solution to their problem.
Training in conflict management and resolution for community residents, especially school staff, pupils, and parents.
Training as mediators for volunteers.
                   


Youth Programs

After-school and weekend tutoring (restricted to students attending schools that host the program).
After-school and weekend art, dance and karate classes and arts and crafts classes for children and parents.
Six-week summer day camp.
School attendance improvement and school newspaper projects (restricted to pupils attending the host schools).
Coaching and officiating classes.
